A larger than average west London garden offers plenty of scope. For this busy couple, where bringing work home is an inevitability, a garden office means the business of work is kept out of the house. With space for more than a desk, it is also where the children keep their drum kit. They have a trampoline, too partially hidden because it has been neatly sunk into the lawn behind a row of four yew columns, plus the eye is distracted by the yew trees and the bamboo and grasses in the pebbled, decorative space beyond. The brief was to provide maximum lawn for the rough and tumble of outdoor games and maximum patio for adult entertaining in a modern, minimalist setting. The neat straight lines of the rendered, painted planters, bench seating and sandstone tiles are softened by the planting which is either round and formal or loose and flowing. It is very much a design of today.
