This working Chiswick couple, both in the public eye, wanted to extend the new, modern feel of their house to the outdoors and make the most of the view from the wall of glass at the rear of the house. Lighting was, therefore, high on their list of priorities as was planting that would blend the contemporary with the traditional, give year-round colour and interest. A sandstone patio near the house is complemented by the sunken seating area, with built-in seating, at the bottom of the garden. The shed is screened with cedar panels which continue around the garden, replacing traditional fencing. The new, central lawn adds softness and gives definition. The copper beech and other trees and shrubs are lit to emphasise their colour and height. The overall effect is peaceful tranquillity – an essential contrast with life in the media spotlight.
