Low maintenance for owners with two homes
The owners of this flat spend most of their time in South Africa and wanted a garden that would not run riot while they were away. But you don't need to live abroad to want a garden which is easy to look after. Whether you are not interested in gardening, don't have the time - or have bought to let and want tenants to have a garden that will look after itself - it is always possible to create the atmosphere you want and maintain it with as little effort as possible. All that is needed here is a bit of watering … but there is still life and growth to watch as well as space to enjoy being out of doors.

Combining adult entertaining with child-friendly space
As new parents, this young couple wanted somewhere safe for their baby to learn to crawl, toddle and walk, without sacrificing their wish to entertain friends. The lawn provides a soft surface for the baby; the nearby patio ensures the parents can stay close while giving the baby some freedom. In this spot, which catches the evening sun, they also have a perfect place to sit outside with a drink; meanwhile, the pergola provides shade (and adds height and depth). Using minimal planting, of exotic plants at their request, the garden meets their priority - to enjoy and use the space, not spend their time working on it.
